Learn the basics of painting with encaustic medium. Topics include: safety; materials; basic fusing using an embossing gun, iron, and blow torch; layering colours, both transparent and opaque; along with carving and scraping. If time permits, additional topics will be covered. The workshop will run over three 2-hour sessions. The sessions will take place on Zoom and a digital download of the videos will be available after each session. A suggested material list will be provided by email (it also appears at the bottom of this page). Please keep in mind that this virtual workshop is a test-run. Participants will be asked to provide feedback as to content and what aspects could be improved upon.

The dates will be Monday June 22, Monday June 29, and Monday July 6 from 1:00pm – 3:00pm (EST).


Suggested Materials:

Electric griddle (available at Canadian Tire, Walmart, Amazon, etc)

Grill Thermometer – Analog or Digital (available at Lee Valley, Princess Auto, etc)

Butane or Propane Torch with Head (available at Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Kama Pigments, etc)

Embossing Gun (available at Michael’s, Amazon, etc)

Encaustic Iron (available at Waxworks Encaustic)

Wooden Panels (available at Home Depot – have them cut in-store to 12×12 or smaller squares and rectangles, Curry’s, Above Ground, Wyndham Art, etc)

Natural Hair Bristle Brushes (available at Lee Valley, Home Depot, Curry’s, Above Ground, etc)

Encaustic Medium (available at Kama Pigments, Waxworks Encaustic, Above Ground, etc)

Oil Paint OR Encaustic Pigment Blocks (available at Kama Pigments, Above Ground, Curry’s, Wyndham Art, etc)

Metal Tins (small tart foil tins available at the grocery store OR empty and cleaned cat food tins OR more study metal tins available at Amazon, etc)

Small Metal Insulated Clips (available at dollar stores or surplus stores, Walmart, etc)

Carving/Pottery Tools AND/OR Razor Blades (available at Above Ground, Curry’s, Pottery Supply House, Amazon, etc)

Blue or Green Painter’s Tape

Apron/Painting Clothes

Paper Towel

Work Station covered with something that is heat resistant (hardboard, cardboard, cement board, etc)

Power Bar

Exhaust Fan or similar

Fire Extinguisher nearby
